Warrant of Fitness (WoF) checks must be carried out on all vehicles in NZ more than three years old to ensure that they are roadworthy and meet certain safety standards. The following items are checked during a Warrant of Fitness inspection:

  • Whether the brakes work properly and the condition of brake pads, rotors, callipers, and brake lines.
  • The condition of your vehicle’s steering and suspension components, including shocks, struts, and tie rods
  • The condition of your vehicle’s tyres and wheels, including tread depth, tyre pressure, and any damage to the tyres
  • That all the lights on your vehicle are working properly, including headlights, taillights, brake lights, and indicators
  • The condition of your vehicle’s windscreen and windows, including checking for cracks and chips.
  • Whether the windscreen wipers are clean, in good condition and working correctly.
  • That all seat belts and airbags are in good working order and meet the required safety standards.
  • The overall condition of your vehicle’s body, including the chassis, underbody, and exhaust system, to ensure there is no rust and corrosion.
  • That the doors open and close safely and are secure.
  • That the speedometer is working correctly
  • That there are no leaks in your vehicle’s fuel system.

If your vehicle passes its inspection, you’ll receive a sticker for your windscreen that’s valid for 12 months (or 6 months for older vehicles). If your vehicle fails the inspection, you will need to have the necessary repairs made and then have the vehicle re-inspected before a WoF can be issued.

Vehicle servicing keeps your vehicle running smoothly. Specific tasks and checks included in a vehicle service may vary depending on the type of vehicle, its age, and the manufacturer’s recommendations. However, some common checks included in a vehicle service are:

  • Oil change – This involves draining and replacing the engine oil, as well as replacing the oil filter
  • Fluid level checks – This includes checking and topping up the vehicle’s fluids, such as coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid
  • Brake inspection – This involves checking the brake pads, discs, and drums for wear and damage, and replacing them if necessary
  • Tyre rotation – This involves moving tyres from one position to another to ensure even wear and extend their lifespan
  • Suspension inspection – This involves checking the shock absorbers, springs, and other suspension components for wear and damage
  • Battery check – This includes checking the battery terminals and cables for corrosion, testing the battery’s charge and load, and replacing the battery if necessary
  • Air filter replacement – This involves replacing the engine’s air filter, which can become clogged with dirt and debris over time and affect the vehicle’s performance
