Engine reconditioning improved fuel efficiency and performance

Engine reconditioning involves a thorough overhaul of the engine to restore it to its original operating condition. Reconditioning can improve a vehicle’s performance, fuel efficiency, and lifespan and is more cost-effective than purchasing a new engine or vehicle.

Taylor Automotive has been reconditioning petrol and diesel engines since 1979. We work on most makes and models of Japanese and Korean cars, motorcycles, campervans, light commercial vehicles and trucks. We specialise in classic and performance cars, and our team also has a long history with European car engines, including major European marquees such as Range Rover, Jaguar, Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, Porsche and Mercedes Benz.

We aim to make your engine rebuild a convenient experience with our drive-in, drive-out service. Simply drop off your vehicle and we'll remove the engine, recondition it and replace it ready for you to drive away again. We'll even keep your vehicle in a secure lock up while the work is being carried out.

Whether you need a single part replaced or a complete engine overhaul, our team of skilled technicians will ensure your vehicle is given the utmost care and attention. We use top-quality parts and materials, and your vehicle will leave our garage running smoother and faster and looking better than ever before.

Contact us to book your vehicle in. We always strip the engine and report back to you before undertaking a full recondition – assuring you of a reliable price estimate.

Performance and race car engine reconditioning

In addition to working with standard engines, Taylor Automotive has been involved in motorsport engine rebuilds for many years.

Our full engineering workshop means we have complete control over every rebuild and do all our own machining and assembling, including crankshaft grinding, reboring and honing, and full cylinder head service. Our approach to performance engine rebuilds is to achieve a custom specification so we machine to tolerances appropriate to your engine. Typical work we undertake on motorsport engines includes:

  • all bearing fitting and sizing of cavities
  • customised resizing and line honing of main tunnels
  • checking clearances of camshaft and lifter bores
  • plug and frost plug modification
  • torque plate rebores and decking of blocks

Marine Reconditioning

Taylor Automotive also provides engine reconditioning services to many leading marine specialists. Our experience and expertise enable us to work on various marine engines, from small jet ski and outboard motors to large MAN commercial engines. Our workshop allows us to undertake all machining projects associated with short or long-block reconditions

Frequently asked questions about engine reconditioning

Signs that an engine may need reconditioning include excessive smoke, loss of power or acceleration, rough idling, strange noises, and excessive oil consumption. These symptoms may indicate that the engine's internal components are worn, damaged, or no longer functioning properly.
It is not always necessary to recondition an engine if it is still running, but it is important to have it inspected regularly to catch any issues early on. Reconditioning an engine can help to extend its lifespan and improve its performance, which can be especially important for high-mileage engines or engines that are used in harsh conditions.
The process usually includes:
  • Disassembly: The engine is taken apart and all components are inspected for wear and damage. This includes removing the pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, cylinder head, and other parts
  • Cleaning: All parts are thoroughly cleaned using a combination of solvents, abrasives, and other cleaning agents. This helps to remove dirt, debris, and other contaminants that can cause engine damage
  • Machining: Some parts may need to be machined to restore their original dimensions and smooth out any rough or worn surfaces. This can include grinding the crankshaft, boring out the cylinders, and resurfacing the cylinder head
  • Replacement of worn parts: Any parts that are worn beyond their service limits are replaced with new ones. This can include bearings, pistons, rings, valves, and other components
  • Reassembly: The engine is put back together using all new gaskets, seals, and other necessary components. All parts are torqued to the manufacturer's specifications, and the engine is tested for leaks and proper operation
The time it takes to recondition an engine can vary depending on the extent of the damage and the complexity of the engine. Generally, engine reconditioning can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
