performance & motorsport engine reconditioning

In addition to working with standard engines, Taylor Automotive have been involved in motorsport engine rebuilds for many years and is a measure of Tom Taylor's interest and passion for the sport.

drag racing

During the 1980's the Taylor Automotive Altered, driven by Terry Rogers, raced at the Meremere Drag Raceway.  The car had a big block chevy engine, totally machined and built by the team at Taylor Automotive.

We have an ongoing interest and involvement in drag racing, and have machined five of the twenty quickest "streeters" in the country.

Typical work we have undertaken include:

  • All bearing fitting and sizing of cavities
  • Customised resizing and line honing of main tunnels
  • Checking clearances of cam shaft and lifter bores
  • Plug and frost plug modification
  • Torque plate rebore and decking of blocks

race karts

Many top drivers began their racing careers in karts and Taylor Automotive have been involved with race karts since the early 90's.  At that time we provided sponsorship and support for Fabian Coultard, who is now one of New Zealand's top V8 Supercar drivers.  We still machine these blocks for many karting enthusiasts.

Taylor Automotive has provided sponsorship at different levels for several of the drivers at Speedway.  This is a sport we follow very closely, particularly through the involvement of Midget driver, Harley Taylor.

Our full engineering workshop means we have complete control over  every rebuild and do all our own machining and assembling, including crankshaft grinding, reboring and honing, and full cylinder head service.  Our approach to motorsport engine rebuilds is to achieve a custom specification so we machine to tolerances appropriate to your engine.

Tom is very proud to be involved with midget car sponsorship and you will often find him in the pits mucking in as a crew member.
